Hey, Ed, nice to meet you. I'm Justin."
"How are ya?"
"Oh, great, super, always. Oh, it's such a treat to meet one of Gordon's friends.
— Justin and Ed Mercer[1]

Justin (credited as The Ogre) was an ogre hologram created by Gordon Malloy. His program was stored in the environmental simulators in Planetary Union Central on Earth.

History[]

In September 2419, Justin battled Gordon in a samurai village, carrying an ax and clad in fantasy-esque armor. Malloy explained to Ed Mercer that Justin was a "badass fighter" with a "really neat personality."[2]

Justin politely introduced himself to Ed and was thrilled with Ed and Gordon's promotions. Gordon tricked Justin into letting down his guard by telling him that he had a ladybug on his foot, and then promptly beheaded him.[2]

Production[]

Justin the Ogre is played by Patrick Cox.

In the original pilot script, Justin is an orc rather than an ogre, and Malloy programmed Justin to be a practicing Christian, but both characteristics were changed prior to shooting.[3]

To create Justin, Howard Berger, then head of the make-up department, cast a mold of Cox's head. It took three hours to transition Cox into his character, with prosthetic pieces fitted, make-up applied, and 40 pounds of armor added last. Justin's armor was really an assemblage of pieces from other suits of armor from the television show Vikings and the movie 300.[4]

Season 2[]

The Orville's executive producers considered bringing Justin back for Season 2: David A. Goodman twice stated his hopes for Justin to return,[5][6] and a month later Brannon Braga announced the writing staff was contemplating whether to write Justin into a script.[7] Ultimately, writers declined and Justin did not return in Season 2.
